The National Fire Authority (NFA) has determined that a fire that occurred on Sunday in the Veiquwawa settlement in Raiwaqa was an act of arson. The blaze erupted around 2:42 p.m. in a corrugated iron house and quickly spread, endangering the lives of its occupants.

Investigations revealed that the fire was ignited following a domestic dispute involving the couple living in the home, which also housed five children. Fortunately, the father managed to evacuate all the children, but he faced severe danger while attempting to rescue his wife from the flames, nearly losing his life in the process.

In response to this incident, NFA’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane, emphasized the critical need for peaceful conflict resolution within families to avert such tragic outcomes. He urged individuals to handle disputes mindfully to prevent extensive losses, which could encompass not only property but human lives as well.

Sowane noted that this incident is a grim reminder, as similar occurrences have transpired in the past, including a fatal fire in Jittu Estate earlier this year, which spurred conversations about mental health and the importance of family cohesion. He called for a collective community effort to prevent frustrations from escalating into catastrophic actions and encouraged residents to report any unsafe circumstances to the NFA promptly, emphasizing that quick interventions can save lives and property.

The NFA highlights the need for increased community awareness and proactive measures regarding fire safety, particularly in light of recent tragedies. While the loss faced by families in such incidents is profound, there is hope that these events may lead to enhancements in community support systems and fire safety measures, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for all. Increased awareness and preparedness can help avert similar disasters, showcasing the strength and resilience of community ties in overcoming challenges.
