The High Court in Suva has scheduled a trial date for Emosi Tikoicina, who is accused of arson for allegedly setting fire to the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute (NATI) last year. Tikoicina, who is currently on bail, faced Justice Thushara Rajasinghe during a court hearing this week.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 7, 2024, when Tikoicina is said to have willfully and unlawfully set fire to the NATI building and its contents. He has entered a not guilty plea and is set to undergo a voire dire, a pre-trial proceeding to determine the admissibility of certain evidence, specifically regarding claims of police assault during his custody.

State prosecutor Zenith Zunaid disclosed that the prosecution’s case will involve nine witnesses in the voire dire stage, followed by an additional 11 witnesses during the main trial, which is scheduled to take place from May 4 to August 15. In an effort to maintain the integrity of the case, Justice Rajasinghe has adjourned the proceedings until June 13 for further mention.

This case reflects broader themes of legal accountability and the pursuit of justice, while highlighting the complexities that arise in the courtroom. As the situation evolves, it is hoped that it will be resolved fairly, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring the rights of all involved.
