In a thrilling contest, the Army women’s rugby team triumphed over the Police team with a narrow 12-10 victory during the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl Competition held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The atmosphere was electric, with fans creating a vibrant display of red and blue as both teams showcased their skills on the field.

The decisive moment of the match came from a crucial penalty kick successfully executed by the Army, sealing their victory in the final moments of the game. Team captain Taina Toga expressed her joy following the match, reflecting on the team’s strategy and execution. She acknowledged a slower start than anticipated and highlighted weaknesses in their defense but emphasized their resilience to maintain focus until the end.

The Army’s preparation benefited from experienced players from the Fijiana XV and Drua teams and those in the high-performance unit program (HPU). However, Toga noted challenges in maintaining team cohesion due to some players being deployed on overseas missions with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

After the match, Toga expressed gratitude to their supporters, families, and fellow military officers, recognizing their invaluable encouragement.

This victory not only boosts the Army’s confidence but also showcases the growing strength and competitiveness of women’s rugby in Fiji. The spirit of sportsmanship, dedication, and community support highlights the positive ethos surrounding the sport, promising an exciting future for women in rugby.

In summary, the Army women’s team displayed tenacity and skill, overcoming adversities to secure a memorable win in a high-stakes match, symbolizing hope and progress in women’s sports.
