In a thrilling contest, the Army women’s rugby team triumphed over the Police team with a close score of 12-10 during the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl Competition held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. The match showcased remarkable performances from both sides in front of an enthusiastic crowd that filled the stadium with vibrant red and blue colors.

The decisive moment of the game arrived when Army was awarded a penalty kick, which they expertly converted, ensuring their victory. Team captain Taina Toga expressed her delight at the win while reflecting on the team’s initial strategy. “We actually started off late; we were supposed to kick off with energy, but our defense faltered at times,” she mentioned, acknowledging the challenges faced during the match. However, she was proud of the team’s determination to maintain their composure until the final whistle.

The Army’s preparation for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl benefited from incorporating players from the Fijiana XV and Drua teams, alongside participants from the high-performance unit program. Toga noted that coordinating the team has been complex due to some players being deployed on missions overseas with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Following their victory, Toga extended her gratitude to their supporters, families, and fellow military personnel for their unwavering encouragement.

The match not only highlighted the competitive spirit within women’s rugby but also reaffirmed the camaraderie and resilience of the Army team, promising an exciting future for women’s sports in the region.

This victory serves as a reminder that hard work and dedication can lead to success, and the growing popularity of women’s rugby in Fiji offers a hopeful outlook for the sport’s development in the coming years.
