In a thrilling and closely contested match, the Army women’s rugby team triumphed over the Police with a narrow 12-10 victory during the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl Competition held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The match showcased intense performances from both teams, captivating fans who filled the stadium with a vibrant display of red and blue.
The game reached its climax with a decisive penalty kick, successfully executed by the Army, which sailed through the goalposts to secure the win in the final moments. Team captain Taina Toga expressed her joy after the match, reflecting on their initial strategy to start strong. However, she acknowledged that defensive lapses led to a struggle during the game. “Actually, we started off late. We were supposed to start with a bang, but our defense faltered, and everyone was just lazy on defense. Nevertheless, we managed to hold our opposition until the last whistle,” Toga stated.
Preparation leading up to the Ratu Sukuna Bowl was enhanced by the inclusion of players from the Fijiana XV and Drua teams, as well as those involved in the high-performance unit program. Toga also mentioned the challenges of assembling the team, as some players are often deployed on missions overseas with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).
As the Army team celebrated their hard-fought victory, Toga extended her gratitude to their supporters, families, and fellow military personnel for their unwavering support.
This victory not only reflects the dedication and skill of the Army women’s rugby team but also highlights the growing support for women’s sports in the region. With the foundation set and the right talent being developed, there is much to look forward to in future competitions.
This match serves as a reminder of the spirit of camaraderie and competition within the military and the community, showcasing that even in tight situations, teamwork and resilience can lead to triumph.
