A temporary bypass road at Armco Crossing near Semo Village is set to open tomorrow following a road slip that disrupted access. The Fiji Roads Authority’s Chief Executive, Apisai Ketenilagi, confirmed that the work is proceeding as planned despite challenges.
The disruption was caused by the corrosion of two large culverts beneath the crossing, which were further weakened by strong water flow, leading to their collapse. Engineering teams are currently conducting ground surveys as water levels continue to recede.
Ketenilagi noted, “We will target to complete by today, but due to the late arrival of crossings transported from other zones, other divisions, we aim to continue working through the night. Hopefully by tomorrow, we should be able to open to traffic.” This thorough approach will also help assess the full extent of the damage both upstream and downstream.
Safety remains the top priority, with a temporary pedestrian crossing already in place and bus services operating on both sides of the affected area. Crews plan to work overnight to facilitate the reopening of the roadway by tomorrow, advising motorists to drive cautiously on the narrow rural bypass routes.
This proactive response demonstrates a commitment to restoring access while prioritizing public safety, offering hope to the local community affected by this disruption.
