Argentina delivered a stunning performance against the Wallabies in Santa Fe, scoring nine tries to come back from a 17-point deficit and secure a commanding 67-27 victory in the Rugby Championship.
The match began with Australia leading 20-3, but Argentina found their rhythm late in the second half, scoring four tries within the final nine minutes of play. This result marks the highest number of points the Wallabies have ever conceded in a test match, surpassing the 61-22 defeat they faced against South Africa in 1997.
The match had followed a tense 20-19 victory for Australia over Argentina just a week earlier in challenging rainy conditions. Under brilliant sunshine this time, Australia appeared strong initially, with Ben Donaldson setting up Andrew Kellaway for the second try, which established a 17-point lead.
Carlo Tizzano scored the first try for Argentina after a penalty goal. However, with ten minutes left in the first half, the home side turned the tide with Mateo Carreras finishing off impressive play by Pablo Matera, followed by skipper Julian Montoya scoring to break through the Wallabies’ defense.
Argentina continued their momentum after halftime, capitalizing on an unforced error from Marika Koroibete to gain favorable field position, resulting in a try from Juan Martin Gonzalez. Following a series of substitutions that left the previous halves watching, Argentina’s dominance continued, culminating in Joaquin Oviedo scoring, bringing the hosts’ tally to 38 points in a row.
