Argentina’s Shocking Comeback: Wallabies Suffer Historic Defeat

Argentina delivered a stunning performance against the Wallabies in Santa Fe, overcoming a 17-point deficit to secure a remarkable 67-27 victory in the Rugby Championship.

The match saw the hosts trailing 20-3 before they found their rhythm in the final ten minutes of the second half, scoring four tries in the last nine minutes. This loss marks the highest point total the Wallabies have ever allowed in a test match, surpassing the previous record of 61-22 set against South Africa in 1997.

Just a week prior, Australia had claimed a narrow 20-19 victory over Argentina in challenging rainy conditions. Under a sunny sky this time, the Wallabies appeared to be in control when Ben Donaldson set up Andrew Kellaway for their second try, extending their lead to 17 points.

Loose forward Carlo Tizzano initiated scoring for the match, pushing through the defense in response to a Los Pumas penalty goal. However, 10 minutes before halftime, the tide turned in favor of the hosts. Mateo Carreras capped off an excellent play orchestrated by Pablo Matera, followed by skipper Julian Montoya exploiting a gap in the Wallabies’ defense.

The momentum shifted further after halftime when an error from Marika Koroibete allowed Argentina to capitalize on field position, leading to a try from Juan Martin Gonzalez. Following a substitution by Wallabies coach Schmidt, which saw the removal of his halfbacks, Argentina continued their impressive display with Pablo Matera adding to the tally and Joaquin Oviedo contributing to a sequence of 38 consecutive points for the home team.
