Argentina Stuns Springboks in Thrilling Championship Showdown

The Springboks’ unbeaten streak in the Rugby Championship has come to an end following a narrow 28-29 loss to Argentina in their fifth-round matchup in Santiago del Estero.

This victory marked Argentina’s first win over South Africa since 2018, breaking an eight-match losing streak and bolstering their slim chances for the title.

The Springboks started strong, quickly establishing a 17-0 advantage within the first 12 minutes with tries from Aphelele Fassi and Jesse Kriel, both converted by Handre Pollard. Fassi’s try came from a well-executed lineout, while Kriel scored after breaking through the defensive line.

After Pollard added a penalty to extend the lead, Argentina responded effectively, capitalizing on a lineout play. Flyhalf Tomas Albornoz’s quick switch led to a break by inside centre Santiago Chocobares, who set up Mateo Carreras for a try.

A critical moment arrived when Springboks winger Kurt Lee Arendse was shown a yellow card for a high tackle on Carreras. While he was sidelined, Argentina seized the opportunity to score twice. Pablo Matera crossed the line after a well-orchestrated play, and prop Joel Sclavi then scored, turning the game in Argentina’s favor.

Argentina’s fourth try came from Tomas Albornoz, who skillfully evaded defenders to score. The Springboks managed to rebound with a try from Cobus Reinach just before halftime, bringing the score to 26-22.

The second half was characterized by intense competition, with both teams exchanging kicks and battling in set pieces. Pollard and Libbok scored penalties, temporarily giving South Africa a 28-26 lead.

However, Albornoz’s brilliance led Argentina back in front with a penalty goal with ten minutes left. As the game neared its end, the Pumas had a chance to extend their lead but lost possession to Eben Etzebeth. The Springboks then advanced downfield, earning a penalty about 30 meters out with one minute remaining. Unfortunately for South Africa, Manie Libbok’s penalty attempt missed the target.

The championship will be settled next weekend in Nelspruit when the teams face off again, with the Springboks currently holding a five-point lead in the standings due to a bonus point earned from this match.
