The Springboks’ undefeated streak in the Rugby Championship has come to an end following a narrow 28-29 loss to Argentina in their fifth round fixture in Santiago del Estero.
This victory marks Argentina’s first win against South Africa since 2018, breaking an eight-match losing streak and keeping their slim title aspirations alive.
The match began with a strong start from the visitors, who quickly established a 17-0 lead within the first 12 minutes. Aphelele Fassi and Jesse Kriel both crossed the try line, successfully converted by Handre Pollard.
Fassi’s try came from a set-piece off a lineout, where he was able to go over without challenge, while Kriel later broke through the defense near the ruck at a difficult angle.
Argentina responded promptly, scoring from a lineout maneuver. A deft switch from flyhalf Tomas Albornoz opened up space for inside center Santiago Chocobares, who set up Mateo Carreras for a try.
A pivotal moment in the first half was a yellow card issued to winger Kurt Lee Arendse following a high tackle on Carreras. With Arendse sidelined, Los Pumas capitalized, scoring twice during his absence.
Pablo Matera touched down on the left side after a wide play that created an opening for Carreras. Shortly after, prop Joel Sclavi powered through to give Argentina the lead.
Tomas Albornoz then added Argentina’s fourth try shortly thereafter, slipping through the defense with a clever dummy.
The Springboks responded just before halftime with a try from Cobus Reinach, trailing 22-26 as they headed into the break.
The second half evolved into a fierce contest, with battles for territory and set pieces dominating the play. Pollard and Libbok exchanged penalties, briefly putting South Africa ahead at 28-26.
With 10 minutes remaining, Albornoz orchestrated a break from a set-piece, allowing Argentina to reclaim the lead with a successful penalty.
Argentina had a chance to secure the win after a lineout, but Eben Etzebeth’s crucial steal allowed the Springboks to transition downfield.
In the final minute, South Africa was awarded a penalty 30 meters out, but Manie Libbok’s attempt went astray, denying the Springboks a dramatic late victory.
The tournament will reach a climax next weekend in Nelspruit, where the teams will meet again. Despite the loss, the Springboks maintain a five-point lead in the standings due to the bonus point they secured from the match.
