Argentina is making moves to strengthen its presence in the Pacific region, expressing interest in becoming a dialogue partner with the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). During a media briefing in Buenos Aires, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno highlighted the shared values between Argentina and Pacific nations, including cultural, historical, and trade ties. Quirno emphasized the potential for improved trade relations and the alignment of interests.

Currently, Chile is the sole South American nation with PIF dialogue partner status, and Argentina is eager to expand its engagement. As part of its broader strategy to enhance economic outreach, Argentina is also considering joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a notable trade agreement involving countries such as New Zealand, the UK, and Vietnam.

However, New Zealand’s stance on Argentina’s potential membership in the PIF is cautious. Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters affirmed that decisions regarding new partners should reflect the consensus of Pacific nations themselves. He refrained from endorsing Argentina’s bid, stating, “We don’t make our decision until we ask our colleagues or our cousins.”

Peters noted that Latin America, home to over 600 million people, is an under-engaged region for New Zealand, suggesting that there are more collaborative opportunities on the horizon. He expressed optimism about building stronger relationships moving forward, highlighting that the Pacific region encompasses nearly a third of the world’s surface and that there is much more to explore in terms of partnership.

Accompanying this diplomatic initiative, Peters leads a parliamentary and business delegation to South America, marking the first such visit since 2007. This delegation underscores New Zealand’s commitment to fostering deeper connections within Latin America and the Pacific.

The pursuit of broader partnerships not only reflects Argentina’s aspirations but also highlights an emerging willingness among nations to strengthen ties across regional boundaries, potentially paving the way for enhanced cooperation and shared growth in the future.
