The role of libraries is being questioned in the age of smartphones and tablets, according to Selina Kuruleca, the permanent secretary for Education. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2024 National Library and Literacy Week at Uluda Holdings ground in Rakiraki, she emphasized that libraries play a crucial role in building networks among people, providing access to resources, and upholding principles of fairness, inclusivity, and freedom of information.
Kuruleca acknowledged the perception that libraries may be becoming outdated in today’s technological landscape, where information is readily available on mobile devices. However, she urged individuals to view libraries not merely as physical spaces but as vital sources of knowledge, inclusion, and optimism.
The theme for the 2024 National Library Week was “Ready, set, library,” while the 2024 International Literacy Day focused on “Advancing multilingual education: Literacy for fostering mutual understanding and peace.”
