Premila Kumar, the senior lone female MP from the Group of 16 (G16) Opposition, expressed deep concern over the government’s economic performance during a recent update. Kumar highlighted that while the government celebrates economic numbers, many Fijians are still struggling to meet their basic needs. She questioned how many people have truly felt relief when shopping at supermarkets or paying utility bills, emphasizing that the rise in duties, taxes, and Value Added Tax (VAT) has made life more difficult for the average citizen.

Kumar pointed out that despite claims of economic growth, that progress appears to benefit only a select few, particularly multinational corporations and elites. She called attention to the fact that essential goods and services have become increasingly unaffordable, leaving many citizens to grapple with an ever-rising cost of living.

This situation highlights a significant disconnection between government economic statistics and the everyday realities faced by ordinary Fijians. The concerns raised by Kumar may resonate with many in the community who feel overlooked and undervalued in discussions about economic prosperity.

In light of these challenges, it is essential for the government to proactively engage with the community, focusing on policies that genuinely uplift all citizens rather than just a privileged few. There remains hope that by addressing these issues and prioritizing the needs of the wider population, the government may foster a more equitable and inclusive economic environment in the future.
