Former Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Kalaveti Ravu and Tekata Toaisi, the Ministry’s Regional Northern Manager, have been found not guilty of all charges against them. Magistrate Jeremaia Savou delivered the ruling at the Suva Magistrate’s Court, stating that there was no case to answer around midday.
The charges levied by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) included allegations that Ravu had interfered with a ministerial investigation concerning the illegal trade of a banned species of beche-de-mer. Toaisi was implicated as an accomplice to Ravu during the period of the investigation, which took place between July and August of the previous year.
This acquittal represents a crucial turning point in the legal proceedings for both individuals, who had faced serious allegations including abuse of office. The decision is viewed as a favorable outcome for Ravu and Toaisi, underscoring the judicial system’s commitment to carefully evaluating all evidence presented.
Both defendants had been preparing for trial, and Ravu’s attorney, Lavi Rokoika, previously indicated the complexity of the case. However, with the recent ruling, a sense of closure has been achieved, allowing Ravu and Toaisi to leave behind the cloud of uncertainty that had enveloped them throughout this legal ordeal.
This case underscores the broader issues of corruption and governance in the region, emphasizing the necessity for thorough investigations and fair judicial processes to uphold the law. With the acquittal, Ravu and Toaisi can now look ahead with optimism toward their future endeavors.
