In a significant development for Ra Province, over 20 villagers from the area have completed training as certified aquaculture fish farmers. This initiative is viewed as a major advancement toward enhancing local livelihoods and promoting economic growth in the region.
The training took place in Nabalabala Village, marking a first for the area and is part of the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry’s broader strategy to elevate aquaculture as a key driver for economic development. Minister Alitia Bainivalu pointed out that aquaculture is an important emerging sector that has the potential to uplift communities and enhance Fiji’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The engagement with Ra Province aligns with a growing trend where local farmers are actively participating in the Ministry’s Food Security Program. Notably, the province has seen a remarkable increase in participation, with 22 farmers approved for various assistance programs in the 2024-2025 period, a figure that reflects nearly a quadrupling in support compared to just two years ago.
Minister Bainivalu emphasized the importance of local ownership of resources and noted the rising demand for sustainable income-generating opportunities in rural areas. This trend is echoed in other recent agricultural initiatives across Fiji, such as training programs focused on sustainable farming practices that have empowered various farming communities.
These combined efforts signal a hopeful outlook for both Ra Province and the wider agricultural community in Fiji. With continuous government support and training initiatives, residents are expected to further improve their livelihoods and contribute significantly to the nation’s development, thereby fostering economic resilience and sustainability in rural regions.
