Alitia Bainivalu, the Fisheries and Forests Minister, conducted an insightful visit to two promising aquaculture pond locations in Kadavu this week. The sites, located in Tabuya and Solovola villages within the Nabukelevu District, show potential for future development in the aquaculture sector.

During her visit, the Minister also had the opportunity to explore a seaweed farm in Cevai, operated by local entrepreneur Maika Vunituraga. This engagement not only highlights the diverse opportunities within Kadavu’s fisheries but also emphasizes the importance of supporting local businesses.

Bainivalu’s tour of Kadavu began last week, where she met with government officials at the Vunisea Government Station to discuss various initiatives and strategies for enhancing the region’s fisheries and forestry sectors. The visit culminated yesterday with a stop at the Kavala Fisheries Station, where further plans for development and support were likely discussed.

This ministerial tour signifies a positive step towards boosting local aquaculture initiatives and enhancing community livelihoods through sustainable fishing practices. The focus on local entrepreneurship like Vunituraga’s seaweed farm reflects a commitment to empowering locals and fostering economic growth in the region.

By investing in aquaculture and supporting local enterprises, the government is paving the way for a sustainable future for Kadavu, promoting not only food security but also job creation for its residents.
