A westerly wind flow is currently dominating Fiji’s weather while a trough of low pressure is expected to approach from the northeast on Friday, bringing increased cloud and showers to the northern and eastern parts of the group. Showers will become more frequent across the north, Lau and Lomaiviti from later tomorrow, with winds shifting to northwesterly and seas remaining choppy.
Through to midnight tomorrow, cloudy periods with brief showers are likely across the southwestern part of Viti Levu (Momi, Nadroga/Navosa and Serua/Namosi), Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau group. Most other areas will be mainly fine, aside from isolated afternoon or evening showers. Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti can expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms to develop later tomorrow. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the west, tending northwest later, and seas moderate to rough.
On Saturday the trough’s influence increases. Occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls are forecast for the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups and over interior and northeastern Viti Levu (Rakiraki–Tailevu North, Nausori–Suva–Lami and Naitasiri). Elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and the chance of isolated thunderstorms. Winds will average moderate to fresh from the north and seas will remain moderate to rough.
Local details: Navua, Suva and Nausori should expect cloudy periods with brief showers tomorrow (min 23°C, max 31°C) and Saturday there may be occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba remain mostly fine with isolated showers (tomorrow 23–32°C), turning partly cloudy with possible afternoon or evening showers on Saturday. Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups will see showers becoming frequent from later tomorrow (tomorrow 23–30°C) and on Saturday can expect occasional showers and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls. Kadavu will have cloudy periods and brief showers (tomorrow 23–30°C), with partly cloudy skies and possible afternoon or evening showers on Saturday. Rotuma continues to be affected by a trough with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate to fresh east to northwesterly winds and moderate to rough seas (tomorrow 23–30°C; Saturday some showers 24–30°C).
People planning time at sea or coastal activities should take account of moderate to rough seas and moderate to fresh winds. Isolated heavy falls on Saturday could bring brief intense downpours in affected areas, so those in low-lying or flood-prone locations should be mindful of changing conditions and watch for updates from the National Weather Forecasting Centre.
