An active trough of low pressure lying slow-moving over Fiji is keeping the group cloudy, wet and windy. As of the National Weather Forecasting Centre bulletin issued at 5:30am Thursday 9 April 2026, flood and flash flood warnings remain in force for parts of Viti Levu and a flash flood alert is in place for the rest of the country. Significant rain with heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms is expected through today, with winds strong at times and rough seas in many areas.
Flood-prone areas adjacent to and downstream of the Tuva River in Nadroga, the Nawaka River and the Nadi River remain under a flood warning. A flash flood warning continues for Viti Levu and a flash flood alert applies to the remainder of Fiji; people in vulnerable low-lying and riverine areas should monitor updates and heed any local advisories. Strong northwesterly winds are being experienced over Vatulele, Beqa, the southern Lau group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, with sustained speeds up to 55 km/h and gusts to 80 km/h. Elsewhere, fresh northwesterly winds will be gusty at times before turning westerly and easing to moderate to fresh later today. Over the waters, seas are generally rough to very rough but are expected to ease to moderate to rough from later today. Rotuma remains under a strong wind warning for its waters with northerly winds 20–25 knots, rough seas and occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms, easing from later today.
Rainfall will be heaviest over the interior and western parts of Viti Levu (from Korolevu–Sigatoka–Nadi and Lautoka–Tavua–Rakiraki), southern Bua and western Macuata (Dreketi–Mali to Udu Point). Most other areas can expect cloudy periods with afternoon or evening showers, some heavy at times, and isolated thunderstorms. Specific forecasts include cloudy periods with afternoon or evening showers, heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms for Navua, Suva and Nausori (min 23°C, max 29°C today; outlook for Friday min 22°C, max 31°C), and cloudy periods with some showers for Nadi, Lautoka and Ba (min 23°C, max 29°C today; outlook for Friday max about 30°C).
Outlook for Friday is for continued cloudy periods with some showers over the interior and western Viti Levu and afternoon or evening showers with heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere. Winds are expected to be moderate to fresh westerlies and seas moderate to rough. Mariners and those undertaking coastal activities should exercise caution until seas and winds ease, and residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas should stay alert to updates from the National Weather Forecasting Centre.
