Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure is keeping the northern and eastern parts of Fiji unsettled, bringing periods of cloud, showers and the chance of isolated thunderstorms today while a northeasterly wind flow prevails. Winds are expected to gradually turn east to southeasterly from later today and seas that are moderate now will become moderate to rough. The bulletin was issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre, Nadi, at 3:30pm on Sunday 12 April 2026.

Through to midnight tomorrow, occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely over the Northern Division, Yasawa group, Lau and Lomaiviti group. Expect cloudy periods with showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with heavy falls possible, over the eastern and interior areas of Viti Levu — including Tavua–Vatukoula, Ra–Rakiraki, the interior of Ra–Ba and Nadroga/Navosa, interior Serua–Namosi/Naitasiri, the Greater Suva/Nausori–Tailevu area, Sigatoka–Korolevu and the Coral Coast to Navua. Elsewhere conditions should be generally fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Localized heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, so residents in vulnerable locations should be prepared for sudden rises in water levels during heavy downpours. Mariners should note that seas will become moderate to rough from later today as winds change direction. Moderate northeasterly winds are expected now, shifting to east to southeasterly later, with moderate seas persisting into Tuesday.

The outlook for Tuesday is for cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms over the eastern and interior of Viti Levu (including Greater Suva/Nausori–Tailevu, interior Ra, Naitasiri and Serua–Namosi, interior Ba and coastal Serua–Namosi), Lau and Lomaiviti groups, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere conditions will be mostly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds are expected to be moderate from the east to southeast and seas moderate.

Local notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect cloudy periods with showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls; today’s maximum about 31°C, overnight minimum tomorrow 23°C and a maximum of 32°C expected. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will be mostly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms with heavy falls, with highs around 32–33°C and lows near 23°C. Yasawa and Mamanuca will see occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms (Mamanuca with possible heavy falls), Sigatoka and the Coral Coast will have cloudy periods with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, and the northern towns of Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni should expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls. Lau and Lomaiviti will have occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls, while Kadavu will be mainly fine apart from possible afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Rotuma remains under a weak trough with cloudy periods, showers and possible thunderstorms, moderate to fresh northeasterlies and moderate to rough seas.
