FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure is spreading cloud and showers across the Fiji group, producing occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms in many areas. A west to northerly wind flow will prevail today, easing to moderate east to southeast winds on Monday. Moderate seas are expected across most waters, though Rotuma will see locally rougher conditions.

Today the heaviest activity is focused over the Northern Division, the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu (including Tavua–Vatukoula, Ra–Rakiraki, interior Ba–Nadroga/Navosa, interior Serua–Namosi/Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Greater Suva/Nausori–Tailevu area, Sigatoka–Korolevu, Coral Coast to Navua), as well as the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere there will be cloudy periods with brief showers and the chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Isolated heavy falls are possible and may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone locations.

Tomorrow (Monday) the focus of showers and isolated thunderstorms shifts to the eastern and interior districts of Viti Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti, southern parts of Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Most other districts can expect cloudy periods with afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds are forecast to become moderate from the east to southeast, with seas remaining moderate through the outlook period.

City and island details: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms tonight with temperatures around 23–30°C, and similar conditions on Monday with isolated heavy falls possible (22–30°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should expect cloudy periods with brief showers and afternoon/evening thunderstorms (23–30°C), with some showers and thunderstorms likely Monday and daytime highs near 31°C. Yasawa and Mamanuca islands will have occasional showers and isolated storms, with daytime temperatures up to 32°C today and slightly cooler on Monday. Northern towns including Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni can expect occasional showers and isolated heavy falls with highs near 30–31°C. Lau and Lomaiviti remain prone to occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls.

Rotuma remains under the influence of the trough with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate to fresh northwesterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Temperatures there are about 23–30°C, easing to 24–31°C on Monday when cloud and some showers will persist with the chance of thunderstorms.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should be prepared for isolated heavy rainfall and the risk of flash flooding. Mariners and small-craft operators should take care in moderate seas and heed local advisories, particularly around Rotuma where seas will be rougher.
