The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is set to convene on Monday as the nation shifts its focus towards important appointments following the election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized that the meeting will play a crucial role in addressing the vacancies that fall under the COC’s mandate.

The COC serves as an advisory body to the President on critical positions, which include the Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Electoral Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, the Parliament Secretary General, the Public Service Commission Chair and members, the Police Commissioner, the Commissioner of Fiji Correction Services, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Auditor General, and the Governor of the Reserve Bank.

Mr. Seruiratu expressed optimism regarding the upcoming meeting, stating, “We are looking forward to that for some of the appointments that will require his (Ratu Naiqama) endorsement.” A significant appointment yet to be made is that of the Commissioner of Police. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has repeatedly highlighted the importance of appointing a substantive Commission of Police (COMPOL).

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the COC, affirmed that the current Acting COMPOL, Juki Fong Chew, is performing well but acknowledged the necessity of appointing a new COMPOL soon. Senior G17 Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya voiced similar sentiments, noting, “A lot of things pending, and I understand it follows due processes. Government knows what needs to be done.”

As the COC prepares for this important meeting, there is hope that these appointments will lead to a more effective governance structure, ensuring that key positions are filled with qualified individuals ready to address the challenges facing the nation.

In summary, the upcoming COC meeting is a pivotal moment for the governance of Fiji, ushering in potential changes in leadership that could strengthen the country’s institutions. The collaboration and shared understanding among government and opposition leaders offer a hopeful path forward toward addressing the lingering vacancies in these critical positions.
