Anthony Hopkins Talks Estranged Daughter and Forgiveness Ahead of Memoir

Anthony Hopkins has opened up about his complicated relationship with his daughter, Abigail, reflecting on their estrangement during a recent interview with The New York Times in connection with his upcoming memoir, We Did OK, Kid. The esteemed actor, known for his roles in films like The Silence of the Lambs, shared his candid thoughts about their lack of communication and connection.

In the interview, Hopkins revealed that his wife, Stella, had invited Abigail to visit them, but there was no response from her. “So I think, okay, fine. I wish her well, but I’m not going to waste blood over that,” he stated, indicating he values personal peace over harboring resentment. The actor emphasized the importance of letting go, saying, “I could carry resentment over the past, but that’s death. You’re not living.”

Hopkins, who has been open about the imperfections in familial relationships, expressed a sense of acceptance regarding their situation. He noted, “Life is painful. Sometimes people get hurt. Sometimes we get hurt. But you can’t live like that.” His perspective reflects a mature understanding of human relationships, focusing on forgiveness and personal growth rather than lingering bitterness.

Abigail, who shares her father with his first wife, Petronella Barker, is known for her work as a musician, with recent music releases and a documentary short about her battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. Despite the estrangement, Abigail had previously indicated an openness to reconciliation, mentioning that it would require a mutual effort.

In 2006, she expressed her feelings about their relationship, stating they had never really been close and had not discussed life’s significant issues. “I love my father. He has been very supportive. I really wish him well,” she had shared, emphasizing her independence through her music career.

Following the release of We Did OK, Kid on November 4, fans will be eager to engage with the reflections and insights of a prolific actor whose life experiences resonate with many individuals navigating complex familial dynamics. Both father and daughter embody a narrative of resilience and personal growth, suggesting that even amid estrangement, there remains an undercurrent of love and well-wishing. This story underscores the notion that while relationships can be fraught with challenges, understanding and kindness might still prevail in their aftermath.
