Experienced fly-half Gareth Anscombe is set to make his return to the Wales national team as he takes on the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in Cardiff tomorrow morning. This marks the first time since last year’s World Cup that Anscombe will don the number 10 jersey, a significant comeback after spending last season sidelined due to a groin injury.

At 33 years old, Anscombe has impressed with his performance at Gloucester, showcasing adaptability and resilience, especially after enduring a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for two years between 2019 and 2021. Coach Warren Gatland has confirmed that Anscombe will handle the goal-kicking duties during the match, and he recognizes the valuable experience he brings to the squad despite acknowledging some reduction in pace.

Gatland stated, “He won’t like me saying this, but he has lost a yard or two of pace… However, having that experience coming back into the side has been good over the last few weeks.” Anscombe’s leadership qualities and ability to communicate effectively with his teammates have also been highlighted as crucial aspects of his return.

With Anscombe’s inclusion, Ben Thomas will shift from fly-half back to his more familiar inside centre position, where he will partner with Max Llewellyn in what is expected to be a dynamic midfield. Gatland praised Thomas’s balance and decision-making skills, adding that he’s not shy about taking the ball to the line, which is vital in international play.

In terms of strategy, Gatland has named only two replacement backs on the bench for the match, including Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow. He expressed optimism about both players, encouraging Anscombe to perform well while also having a capable option in Costelow, who has been training exceptionally well.

The highly anticipated match kicks off at 1:40 AM, and all eyes will be on Anscombe as he looks to lead Wales to victory.

This is a moment of optimism for Welsh rugby fans, as Anscombe’s return not only strengthens the team’s lineup but also embodies the spirit of resilience and determination that can be an inspiration for the team going forward.
