Experienced fly-half Gareth Anscombe is set to take the field against the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in Cardiff. This marks his return to Wales’ number 10 shirt for the first time since the previous year’s World Cup.
The 33-year-old missed the entirety of last season due to a groin injury but has made a strong comeback with his new club, Gloucester. Coach Warren Gatland announced that Anscombe will handle goal-kicking duties for the match against Fiji. Gatland acknowledged that despite Anscombe’s impressive international career, having played 37 games over nine years, he has had to adapt his style following a serious knee injury that sidelined him for two years from 2019 to 2021.
“While he may not have the same pace he once did, his experience has brought positive contributions to the team in recent weeks,” Gatland stated. He emphasized that Anscombe instills confidence and effectively communicates, enhancing leadership within the squad.
Anscombe’s return to the lineup allows Ben Thomas to transition from fly-half to his preferred inside centre position, forming a new partnership with Max Llewellyn in the midfield. Gatland noted Thomas’s improvement, highlighting his capability to carry the ball effectively and maintain composure under pressure.
Gatland has named only two replacement backs on the bench, which includes Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow. He expressed confidence in both Anscombe’s ability to perform well during the match and Costelow’s readiness to contribute if needed.
The highly anticipated match is set to commence at 1:40 a.m., promising an exciting showcase for fans.
This return not only showcases Anscombe’s resilience but also sets an optimistic tone for the Welsh team as they aim for a strong performance against a formidable opponent.
