Gareth Anscombe, an experienced fly-half, has been named to lead Wales against the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in Cardiff. This match marks Anscombe’s return to the Welsh number 10 jersey for the first time since the World Cup last year after missing the previous season due to a groin injury. The 33-year-old has showcased his capabilities at his new club, Gloucester.

Wales coach Warren Gatland announced that Anscombe will take on the goal-kicking responsibilities in the upcoming game. Over his nine-year international career, Anscombe has had to adapt his playing style following significant injuries, including a knee injury that kept him off the pitch for two years from 2019 to 2021. Gatland acknowledged a slight decline in Anscombe’s speed but emphasized the value of his experience and leadership within the squad. “He brings a lot of confidence and self-belief into the squad. He communicates well, which is essential for leadership,” he noted.

With Anscombe’s return, Ben Thomas will move from fly-half back to his preferred inside centre position, creating a new midfield partnership with Max Llewellyn. Gatland praised Thomas for his performances, highlighting his ability to maintain composure under pressure and shift the ball effectively in tight situations.

The coaching staff has only named two replacement backs for the match, including Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow, indicating confidence in Anscombe’s stamina and performance. Gatland expressed hope for a strong showing from Anscombe, while also recognizing the talent and training progress of Costelow.

The anticipated match will kick off at 1:40 am, and fans can look forward to seeing Anscombe back on the field, bringing both experience and leadership to the team.

This story reflects a positive outlook on Anscombe’s recovery and return to international play, illustrating how a veteran’s presence can enhance team dynamics and performance.
