Experienced fly-half Gareth Anscombe will be taking the field to face the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in Cardiff tomorrow morning. This marks Anscombe’s return to Wales’ number 10 shirt for the first time since his appearance in last year’s World Cup.

The 33-year-old missed the previous season due to a groin injury, but has been performing well with his new club, Gloucester. Coach Warren Gatland has announced that Anscombe will handle the goal-kicking duties against Fiji and acknowledged the player’s growth following both a serious knee injury and his one-year absence. Gatland noted, “He won’t like me saying this but he has lost a yard or two of pace from where he was, whereas in the past he was able to cover that full-back position.” However, he emphasized Anscombe’s experience as a valuable asset to the team.

Anscombe’s return enables Ben Thomas to move from fly-half to his more natural position at inside centre, where he is set to collaborate with Max Llewellyn, forming a new partnership in the midfield. Gatland praised Thomas for his impressive form, highlighting his effective balance and ability to make quick, smart decisions on the field.

On the bench against Fiji, Gatland has named only two replacement backs, including Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow. He expressed optimism about both players, stating, “Hopefully Gareth goes out and gives a good performance, but Sam has been training exceptionally well. We feel confident Gareth can get through the game, but also we’ve got someone who can come on and hopefully add something to the performance.”

The match is set to kick off at 1:40 am, promising an exciting showdown for both teams.

In summary, Gareth Anscombe’s return to the national team is a significant boost for Wales, showcasing his leadership and experience. Despite recent challenges, his performance could be pivotal in enhancing the team’s chances against Fiji.

This match not only highlights Anscombe’s resilience but also reflects a hopeful future for the Welsh team as they adapt and strategize under capable leadership. Enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing a thrilling encounter on the field.
