Fijian Drua rookie forward Angelo Smith is officially part of the team on a two-year contract, marking an exciting new chapter in his rugby career. On his first day at the Drua camp, Smith trained with his teammates for the first time and noted that while the opening session was challenging, the support from the squad made it easier for him to adapt.
At 24 years old, Smith has familial roots in Lomati, Kabara, and hails from Nananu, Tailevu. His return to play rugby in Fiji after years abroad is both emotional and rewarding for him. A former student of Marist Brothers High School and Saint Thomas Secondary School, he previously played for the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby Pacific before joining the Drua.
Smith’s rugby journey has been impressive; he represented the Fiji U20 team and excelled at Wests Rugby in Brisbane, where he played a key role in ending a 16-year championship drought in 2022. He also accumulated valuable experience during his time at the Melbourne Rebels, where he earned 20 Super Rugby caps.
Expressing his excitement, Smith stated that playing in front of his family and community adds deeper meaning to this chapter of his career. He is eager to make a significant impact in both attack and defense, while serving as an inspiration for his young nephews watching from home.
Smith’s signing is part of a broader trend among Fijian rugby players returning to their roots to enhance local teams. As seen with recent signings like Iosefo Namoce, this movement contributes positively to the landscape of Fijian rugby, inspiring future athletes and revitalizing the sport at home. With the upcoming Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season on the horizon, the infusion of talented players like Smith into the Drua brings hope for a successful and invigorating season ahead.
