Opposition MP Virendra Lal is urging the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance regulations surrounding amusement rides to ensure public safety after a recent Ferris wheel incident at the Wairiki Sevens. In light of this accident, Lal believes it is imperative for authorities to take significant action, including potentially banning unsafe amusement rides.
He stressed that the government must prioritize the safety of its citizens by enforcing strict safety protocols that mandate regular inspections and maintenance of all amusement attractions. “The safety of our people is a serious matter; we do not want further tragic accidents. It is essential for officials to act by shutting down rides until they can prove their safety,” Lal stated.
This incident serves as a chilling reminder of the risks associated with outdated and improperly maintained rides, particularly in light of the tragic event at the Fiji Showcase in 2023, which resulted in a young woman’s death. Lal pointed out that the existing safety measures are insufficient and that many of the rides in operation are too old to be deemed safe. He noted, “We are fortunate that the recent accident did not lead to a fatality, unlike last year’s tragedy. This should serve as a wake-up call.”
