Opposition MP Virendra Lal is urging the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance the regulations governing amusement rides to ensure public safety. His call for action arises after a recent incident involving a Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens, which, while not resulting in fatalities, underscored the risks associated with outdated and poorly maintained rides.
Lal emphasized the need for the authorities to implement decisive measures, including a ban on unsafe amusement attractions, until they can be verified as secure. He advocated for prioritizing the safety of citizens through strict enforcement of safety standards, insisting that all rides undergo regular inspections and maintenance.
“The safety of our people must be taken seriously; we cannot afford any more tragic accidents,” Lal noted. He referred to previous incidents, such as the tragic case at the Fiji Showcase in 2023 involving a young woman’s death, as indications of a significant failure within existing safety protocols.
As the Shadow Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lal expressed strong concern over the apparent lack of oversight by the Occupational Health and Safety department. He pointed to incidents where rides posed severe risks to children, calling for immediate remedial actions.
“Our children’s safety should never be compromised,” he stressed, pointing out inadequacies in the current safety measures and the outdated condition of the amusement rides. He is hopeful that this recent incident serves as a crucial turning point for improvement, ensuring that safety becomes the top priority moving forward.
This situation presents an opportunity for the government to reassess its approach to public safety, potentially leading to stronger regulations and safer environments for families enjoying amusement parks in the future. A proactive stance on safety can not only prevent tragic incidents but also restore public trust in recreational venues.
