Manchester United’s head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledges that criticism from former players is to be expected as the team continues to face challenges this season. He reflects on the state of the club, admitting that they are “underachieving” and should have accrued more points, particularly this year.

As United prepares for their upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth, the team aims to secure a win that would keep them in the top six for the second consecutive week. This achievement would be notable, as it would mark the first time since the end of the 2023-24 season that they have maintained such a position. This period followed a disheartening 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace, a match that nearly led to Erik ten Hag’s dismissal prior to a FA Cup final victory.

While Amorim finds some merit in the criticism, he also emphasizes that the club’s struggles stem from their inability to win games. He stated, “Not winning is the issue. The problem is that me as a manager, I’m not doing good enough. That is a fact also and I can accept that.” He suggests that past players, accustomed to a tradition of success, might struggle to understand the current state of the club, which is not where it ought to be.

Despite potential injuries and uncertainty surrounding key players like Noussair Mazraoui and Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim remains committed to his younger squad members, like 20-year-old Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven, even as their inexperience poses challenges. Additionally, he is faced with the situation regarding midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who is eager for more playing time and considering a loan move. Amorim expressed a desire to keep communication open with his players, stating, “I just want my players happy,” and that he is always available for discussions about their goals and frustrations.

Amid the difficulties, there is hope that the young talents will grow and mature into reliable contributors for the team, while Amorim continues to work on instilling a winning mentality at Manchester United.
