A serious workplace incident at Vatukoula Gold Mine has resulted in a tragic outcome for Amitesh Ram, leaving him completely bedridden and unable to communicate, eat, see, or move. His family suspects medical negligence during a surgical procedure performed at Lautoka Hospital and is calling for an urgent investigation by the Ministry of Health.

Amitesh was initially admitted to Tavua Hospital, where he received X-rays and initial treatment before being transferred to Lautoka for surgery. Following the procedure, his family asserts that his health significantly deteriorated, leading to his readmission to Tavua Hospital. According to his brother, Rimon Ram, Amitesh then experienced severe breathing difficulties, necessitating another transfer back to Lautoka Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care.

Rimon alleges that medical staff informed the family that Amitesh had removed his oxygen tube, leading to a cardiac arrest that lasted approximately four minutes, during which he required CPR and electric shocks. The family claims that the oxygen deprivation and lack of blood flow to the brain during that critical period caused severe brain injury, resulting in his current paralysis.

Amitesh now relies on a feeding tube for nourishment and a urinary catheter for basic care. National Union of Workers Industrial Relations Officer Satish Chandra, who witnessed the decline in Amitesh’s condition, supports the family’s assertion that they deserve clarity regarding the treatment he received.

FBC News has sought responses from the Ministry of Health, Vatukoula Gold Mine, and Aspen Medical, though Aspen Medical has refrained from commenting on the situation. The family maintains their call for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of Amitesh’s care, emphasizing the need for accountability regarding his devastating condition.

This unfortunate case highlights critical concerns regarding workplace safety and the standard of care provided in medical facilities, underlining the importance of vigilant oversight and thorough investigations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
