Opposition member Hem Chand has emphasized the urgent need for the Government to address the rising issue of school dropouts in Fiji. In light of Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro’s comments regarding the 2024 Year Eight Examination results, Mr. Chand pointed out a troubling trend in primary school education. He reported that in 2023, a total of 1,162 students left school before finishing primary education, marking a staggering 34 percent increase from the previous year’s figure of 755 dropouts.

Despite the introduction of a free education scheme by the former Bainimarama government in 2014, the dropout rate has escalated, with 2023 witnessing the highest number of early school leavers in recent years. Mr. Chand expressed deep concern over the shocking rise in dropouts, stating that over the last five years, more than 1,000 students did not complete Year 8.

He also highlighted how past government initiatives, such as the Free Education Grant and Transport Assistance, effectively reduced dropout rates. However, Mr. Chand pointed to current transportation challenges as a significant factor hindering students’ regular attendance in schools. He further raised concerns over the prevalence of drug-related cases in schools and the need for the Government to address teacher retention issues.

This situation presents an opportunity for the Government to reassess its educational policies and consider implementing measures that can effectively support students and improve retention rates. It is crucial to address these challenges in a collaborative manner, bringing together educators, parents, and policymakers to create an environment that encourages students to stay and thrive in school.

In summary, the article highlights a growing concern over increasing school dropout rates in Fiji, calling for urgent attention and action from the Government to tackle the underlying issues impacting education.
