Siromi Turaga, the Justice Minister, commended his political party, The People’s Alliance, for its dedication to serving the public. During remarks to residents of Nabuna in Cawa, Koro, Turaga highlighted the party’s role in instigating change within the community.
Cawa district encompasses the villages of Cavaga, Tavua, Nabasovi, Kade, Nabuna, and Vatulele. Turaga emphasized the importance of The People’s Alliance, stating that although it is relatively young, it has fulfilled the aspirations for change that the community had longed for. He referenced the freedoms granted to citizens as enshrined in the 2013 Constitution, expressing that the party is committed to listening to the people’s needs.
Reflecting on the lead-up to the 2022 elections, Turaga expressed gratitude for the support from Cawa and stated that he is proud to represent the area. He also announced that the party would hold its Annual General Meeting soon. Additionally, he mentioned that the Minister for Agriculture plans to visit Koro next month to focus on the region’s agricultural potential. An agriculture show is also set for next month to support local farmers.
Turaga criticized the previously active FijiFirst party, alleging that it prioritized its own interests over those of the populace during its time in power. He noted that for many years, the concerns of the iTaukei community were overlooked. He pointed out that the staff of the Ministry of Justice have become more proactive, reaching out to various provinces to deliver services directly.
On the matter of investigations, Turaga revealed that numerous cases of alleged fund mismanagement had been referred to FICAC from the Housing Authority, yet only one case has progressed to court. He also mentioned that he and other ministers are currently under investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption amidst changes in leadership within the agency following the resignation of former acting commissioner Francis Pulewai. Barbara Malimali has since assumed the role and confirmed a transition to new leadership.
