A man has come forward with allegations of assault by officers from the Nausori Police Station, claiming the incident occurred as he was attempting to return home to his son after school.
The man, originally from Gau but currently residing in Rewa, stated that he was in Nausori Town seeking $2 for transport. He needed to rush back home after his wife was hospitalized and required an urgent transfer to Suva. Time was of the essence as it was after 3 PM, coinciding with the end of the school day for his Year 2 son.
According to the man’s account, while he was asking passersby for assistance, the police suspected him of consuming alcohol in public and subsequently apprehended him. Disturbingly, he claims that his daughter witnessed the handcuffing and followed him to the police station, where he alleges he was physically assaulted while still in restraints.
In addition to these allegations, the man revealed that charges have since been filed against him. In response to the situation, Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has ordered an investigation into the claims, with police confirming that the matter is currently under review.
The incident shines a light on the need for police accountability and the importance of addressing allegations of misconduct within the force. Such cases not only affect the individuals involved but also impact community trust in law enforcement.
