A 40-year-old man has been remanded by the Magistrates Court in Suva following the alleged murder of an elderly man. The accused, identified as Netani Toma, appeared in court before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza. He faces one charge of murder in connection with the incident that occurred last Saturday in the Namadai settlement of Namadi Heights.
According to court proceedings, Toma was under the influence of alcohol when he assaulted the 70-year-old victim. The elderly man sustained severe injuries and was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away on Tuesday.
The case has been scheduled for its first mention in the High Court on November 22. Toma has also been informed that he may apply for bail in the High Court.
This incident illustrates the devastating consequences of alcohol-fueled violence and serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing substance abuse issues within communities. As the case progresses, it will be crucial to provide support to both the victim’s family and the community to facilitate healing and prevent such tragedies in the future.
