Alleged Email Plot Targets Fiji PM Rabuka, Sparks Coalition Tensions

The National Federation Party (NFP) has raised alarming allegations of a “deliberate and coordinated conspiracy” aimed at disrupting the coalition government and undermining the relationship between Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and NFP Leader Professor Biman Prasad. NFP General Secretary Kamal Iyer disclosed that the party became aware of a troubling email sent to Prime Minister Rabuka from an Australian citizen, alleging that Professor Prasad was conspiring against the PM regarding a potential Cabinet removal.

Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for his courtesy in forwarding the email to Prasad and the party, Mr. Iyer asserted that this correspondence is indicative of a broader scheme orchestrated by various individuals both within Fiji and abroad, designed to incite mistrust and division within the coalition government. He described the claims made in the email as “malicious, fabricated, and filled with lies,” emphasizing that it constituted an attack on the integrity of the coalition government.

Iyer firmly stated that neither Professor Prasad nor the NFP has had any recent communication with former party president Tupou Draunidalo, contradicting the implications within the email. He clarified that there have been no interactions since Draunidalo resigned from the party and her parliamentary role in January 2017.

The email appears to have been crafted with the intent to “drive a wedge” between the Prime Minister and the NFP leader, suggesting that Prasad was plotting to rally support from other NFP ministers against the PM. Describing the situation as a political smear campaign, Iyer added that such underhanded tactics aim to fracture the unity of the coalition and erode public confidence in its leadership.

He expressed serious concerns regarding the access and dissemination of sensitive information, noting the troubling indication that individuals outside Fiji seem to possess prior knowledge about confidential political developments. This raises pressing questions about potential leaks and orchestrated efforts to manipulate public perception.

Amidst these challenges, the NFP remains undeterred, asserting its commitment to the coalition government and the principle of democratic governance. Iyer concluded by declaring that those attempting to destabilize the government will ultimately fail. The NFP has called on the Fijian populace to remain vigilant against misinformation and politically motivated schemes that seek to create division.

In light of the recent events, the resilience and determination of the coalition government are on display as it confronts these adversities. The NFP’s advocacy for unity and clarity in governance fosters optimism for a politically stable and prosperous Fiji moving forward.
