Recent allegations have emerged regarding the treatment of workers at Grace Road Church (GRC), with reports of severe mistreatment being made by an ex-member. This individual, who left the GRC-owned True Mart in Navua after an eight-year period, described her experiences as akin to “slavery.”
Speaking anonymously, the Korean American woman detailed the punishments inflicted upon individuals who disobey orders or make mistakes. She claimed that workers faced physical abuse, including being beaten with long sticks and subjected to group assaults where multiple people would strike them simultaneously. The rationale given for such brutal treatment, she stated, is framed as a method of bringing individuals “back to God.”
The former worker recounted an incident just before her escape, where she was reprimanded for exhibiting disappointment over a work schedule that would prevent her from seeing her young daughter. Following this, she was subjected to what she referred to as a “thrashing” by her supervisor. In her words, this incident left her in pain and instilled fear within her, as she could not defend herself during the assault without it being interpreted as disobedience.
In response to her allegations, the woman reported the incidents to the Human Trafficking Unit of the Fiji Police Force. Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, confirmed that an investigation into these claims has commenced. The woman is also seeking assistance from the Government to reunite with her children, who remain at the Grace Road facility.
As this situation unfolds, it is important for authorities to thoroughly examine these serious allegations in order to ensure the safety and well-being of all affected individuals.
Summary: A former worker at Grace Road Church has alleged physical abuse and harsh treatment from supervisors, describing experiences similar to slavery. She reported these claims to the authorities, who are conducting an investigation. The case highlights the pressing need for scrutiny and protection for vulnerable workers in such environments.
While the allegations are troubling, there is hope that ongoing investigations will address these issues and pave the way for reforms, ensuring better protections for workers in similar settings.
