Liam Barry, formerly the assistant coach for the All Blacks 7s, has been named the Head Coach of the Australian men’s 7s team. Barry has a wealth of experience, having spent six years as a second-in-command to Clark Laidlaw, the former NZ 7s coach.
Expressing his enthusiasm for this new role, Barry remarked on the strong foundation laid by the previous management team that led the Australian squad through the last Olympic cycle in Paris. “It’s a great base to start from and it’s a credit to John and the management with what they’ve done in the last cycle,” he stated.
Barry emphasized that he does not intend to overhaul the team’s current strategies but aims to build upon the existing strengths of the players, who he described as fit, fast, and skilled. He is eager to work with them as they prepare for their upcoming challenges.
Barry’s debut as head coach will be at the SVNS World Series opener in Dubai, where he will have the opportunity to implement his vision for the team.
This appointment could signify a promising future for the Australian men’s 7s team, as Barry’s experience and focus on continuity may enhance the squad’s performance on the world stage. The foundations created in the previous Olympic cycle could serve as a springboard for future success, inspiring both players and fans alike.
