Liam Barry, previously an assistant coach for the All Blacks 7s, has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Australian men’s 7s team. Barry brings with him six years of experience, having worked alongside former New Zealand 7s coach Clark Laidlaw.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Barry stated, “I’m very excited to take the team into the next cycle off the back of what they’ve done at the Paris Olympics. It’s a great base to start from, and it’s a credit to John and the management for their achievements during the last cycle.” He emphasized his aim to build on the established frameworks rather than making drastic overhauls, noting, “The players are fit, fast, and skilful, and I’m looking forward to working with them.”
Barry’s first challenge as head coach will take place at the SVNS World Series opener in Dubai, marking an important step for both him and the Australian team.
This appointment brings a fresh perspective to the Australian men’s 7s side, as Barry’s insights from the successful All Blacks 7s program may foster further development in the team. With his experience and a solid foundation laid by the previous management, there is a hopeful outlook for the future of Australian rugby sevens.
