Liam Barry, previously the assistant coach for the All Blacks 7s, has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Australian men’s rugby sevens team. Barry brings six years of coaching experience, having worked alongside former New Zealand 7s coach Clark Laidlaw.
In a statement reflecting on his new role, Barry expressed his enthusiasm for leading the team into the next competitive cycle after their efforts at the Paris Olympics. He acknowledged the strong foundation laid by the previous management and commended their accomplishments over the last cycle.
“I’m not looking to reinvent the wheel but rather build on what is already there,” Barry stated. He highlighted the players’ attributes of being fit, fast, and skilled, and he looks forward to collaborating with them.
Barry’s debut as head coach will take place at the upcoming SVNS World Series opener in Dubai.
This transition in leadership presents an opportunity for Barry to leverage his experience and foster the existing talents within the team. As he aims to build on the past successes, there is optimism that his fresh perspective will lead to continued growth and performance improvement for the Australian men’s 7s team.
This change in coaching also showcases Australia’s commitment to enhancing its rugby sevens program, promising an exciting future for the sport in the country.
