FIJI Airways Fijiana debutant Alfreda Fisher is embracing her new journey in rugby, having made her first appearance in the fast-paced world of sevens. After transitioning from the 15s format, Fisher debuted at the Singapore Sevens over the weekend, where she gained firsthand experience against formidable opponents.

In her initial outing, Fisher came off the bench during Fiji’s opening pool match against Australia, where the level of competition presented a steep learning curve. However, she made a significant impact in the team’s concluding pool match against Japan, scoring the first try in a commanding 34–12 victory.

Reflecting on her debut, Fisher acknowledged the challenges posed by the switch from 15s to 7s. She remarked on the increased pace and intensity, which require a different skill set. “It has been a day of learning. There are many changes from how we play in 15s to 7s, and I’m still learning,” she shared. Her experience has been positively influenced by the unwavering support of her teammates, who have provided guidance throughout her transition. “The girls have been very helpful, guiding me through the processes. I’m thankful to everyone and feel blessed to have the opportunity to represent my country in another code of the game,” Fisher expressed.

Looking ahead, the Fijiana team is eager to build on their experiences and perform better at the upcoming tournament in Perth, Australia. They have set their sights on recovering after narrowly missing out on qualification for the Cup competition in Singapore, especially after a heartbreaking loss to the USA, where Fiji fell 17-22 in extra time.

Fisher’s journey highlights the resilience and determination of athletes transitioning between formats, embodying the spirit of growth and teamwork in rugby.
