The Fiji Police Force is once again issuing a warning about the significant risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, emphasizing that it can lead to severe injuries or fatalities. This advisory comes in the wake of a tragic accident on Wednesday in Waitolu, Naitasiri, where two men lost their lives following a road incident.
The victims, ages 21 and 45, were allegedly under the influence of alcohol and became involved in a physical altercation that spilled onto the roadway, resulting in a collision with a bus driven by a 30-year-old man. The 21-year-old victim was declared dead at Vunidawa Hospital, while the 45-year-old succumbed to his injuries after being transferred to Colonial War Memorial Hospital the following morning.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana pointed out that this tragic incident could have been avoided if the victims’ judgment had not been compromised by alcohol. He stressed that overindulgence in alcohol poses a formidable risk to all road users, including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians.
SSP Divuana underscored the importance of responsible behavior, urging individuals to take accountability for their actions. He reflected on the heartache that two families are experiencing, particularly during the holiday season, which is meant to be a time of joy. He noted the need for ongoing efforts from road safety advocates to emphasize the dangers of alcohol, as it can significantly impair one’s ability to react quickly and make wise decisions.
Furthermore, he highlighted a positive shift in road safety statistics, mentioning that the national road death toll currently stands at 58, a notable decrease from 74 during the same period last year.
This incident serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility we share on the roads, especially during festive periods. It is crucial to heed warnings and make safer choices to prevent further tragedies.
Overall, while the situation is deeply saddening, the declining trend in road fatalities offers a glimmer of hope for improved safety awareness among the community.
