The National Fire Authority (NFA) has reported a concerning increase in property fires during the first half of 2024, with a total of 81 incidents recorded. This marks a rise in both the number of fires and the cost of damages, which has surged by an alarming 43%, indicating a shift in the landscape of fire-related incidents. Specifically, last year, financial losses amounted to approximately $7.37 million, which has now escalated to over $10.56 million this year.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane noted a significant change in the causes of fires over the past 18 months. Traditionally, the leading causes of property fires from 2019 to 2023 were associated with electrical faults, arson, and unattended cooking. However, recent data indicates a troubling trend towards incendiary incidents, with “incendiary” now identified as a predominant cause alongside electrical faults. The analysis shows that from January to June 2024, nearly all of the events—approximately 95%—occurred in residential properties, pointing to the vulnerability of homes within the community.

The figures reveal a troubling increase in displacement due to fires, with 652 individuals affected this year compared to 566 in 2023. This raises important considerations about community safety and the mechanisms in place for fire prevention. Sowane urges homeowners to take proactive measures to secure their properties, especially when leaving them unattended, by notifying neighbors or local authorities.

Reflecting on the alarmingly rising trend of incendiary fires, community engagement and adherence to safety protocols are more essential than ever. The NFA is committed to raising awareness and improving fire safety practices, hoping that enhanced public vigilance can contribute to a safer environment.

The NFA’s findings underline the importance of community collaboration in combating fire risks. As awareness of fire safety and potential hazards increases, there remains hope that collective efforts may significantly reduce the number of fire incidents and subsequent easements of distress within the community.
