A woman has been hospitalized in Suva following a serious incident involving allegations of violence from her partner. Authorities found her outside an apartment complex with noticeable injuries, prompting immediate medical assistance. She was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.
While police are actively searching for the suspect, they have not yet located him. The incident adds to the ongoing concerns surrounding domestic violence in Fiji, a serious issue characterized by alarming statistics revealing that nearly two out of three women face physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes.
The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has issued statements reflecting deep sorrow and outrage at this trend of violence. They called for justice for the victim and emphasized the need for collective action across society to eradicate violence against women. Minister Lynda Tabuya has reassured affected women that support is available through various resources including the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and domestic violence helplines.
This incident comes five months after another tragic case where a woman lost her life due to similar circumstances. The increase in such violent occurrences highlights the urgency for community involvement and preventive measures to ensure safe environments for all women and girls in Fiji.
By focusing on awareness, education, and community engagement, there is hope that future incidents can be curtailed. Efforts via the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, initiated in June 2023, are designed to address these challenges and foster safer living spaces for all.
