Alarming Rise in Crimes Against Girls: What’s Behind the Statistics?

Police have reported that in September, a higher number of girls fell victim to crimes against children compared to boys.

In a statement, authorities revealed that there were 117 reported cases of crimes against children last month, with 90 victims being girls and 27 boys. Among these cases, 66% were classified as sexual offences, 29% as assault-related, and 5% related to other types of offences.

The police noted that the Western and Central divisions saw a reduction in these crimes, with decreases of 47% and 29%, respectively, while other divisions experienced an uptick in cases.

Additionally, approximately 15% of the reported cases were domestic in nature, involving relationships such as parent-child, uncle-niece/nephew, and other family ties.

The rise in overall crimes against children was primarily attributed to an increase in cases of assault causing actual bodily harm, which rose from 18 to 26 incidents.
