The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has expressed concern over the rising number of Fijian seasonal workers who have abandoned their employment abroad, a trend he warns is adversely affecting families and placing undue strain on the country’s labor mobility systems. Addressing Fiji’s Country Liaison Officers (CLOs) during a recent meeting, the Minister described this situation as one of the most significant challenges facing Fiji’s overseas employment initiatives.
Singh emphasized that when workers abscond, they not only violate their contracts but also threaten future employment prospects for fellow Fijians. This alarming behavior not only causes distress within families but also places additional pressure on existing systems designed to support labor mobility. He pointed out that misinformation from some members of the Fijian diaspora is exacerbating the situation, as incorrect advice is being offered to workers.
Moreover, the Minister raised serious concerns regarding unethical employers who exploit workers through excessive deductions and overcharging for accommodation and transportation, often using alternate company names to conceal their practices. Despite these challenges, Singh praised the vital work done by Country Liaison Officers, who provide essential support as mentors, counselors, and advocates for the well-being of Fijian workers abroad.
The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing oversight, enforcement, and support systems to ensure that Fijian workers overseas are adequately protected, and the integrity of labor mobility schemes is maintained. Such commitments reflect an ongoing effort to safeguard the welfare of workers and uphold Fiji’s reputation in the international employment sector. With these measures, there is hope for a more stable and supportive environment for seasonal workers moving forward.
