National long-distance athlete Akeneta Lutu is poised to achieve a remarkable three-peat at the Fiji Finals, aiming to defend her 3000-meter gold medal for the third consecutive year. The Year 12 student from Lomaivuna High School exhibited her exceptional ability by breaking the senior girls’ 1500m record at the recent Triple N Zone meet, despite battling illness.

Lutu’s determination shone through as she won gold and set a new record time of 5 minutes and 25.15 seconds, outpacing the previous record of 5 minutes and 35.89 seconds that had stood since 2021. Reflecting on her achievement, Lutu shared that she initially hesitated to compete due to her health but felt obligated to support her team, showcasing her commitment and resilience.

As she prepares for the Fiji Finals, Lutu recognizes the substantial pressure she’s under. She mentioned her limited training due to her health and school commitments, but is focused on maximizing her training time leading up to the event. Her journey highlights not only her personal ambitions but also the collective spirit among Fijian youth athletes, who are increasingly breaking records and pushing the boundaries of competitive sports in Fiji.

Moreover, the atmosphere of the Triple N Zone athletics competition has fostered a burgeoning culture of athletic excellence in Fiji. With young competitors like Lutu achieving significant milestones, the future of sports in the region looks bright and promising. As the excitement builds for the Fiji Finals, her story serves as inspiration for many aspiring athletes, reinforcing the values of hard work, community support, and resilience.
