Aitken Spence PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s leading conglomerates, is making strides in its expansion into Fiji’s agricultural sector through its subsidiary, Elpitiya Plantations. Following initial explorations last year, the company has recently convened a delegation to Fiji to advance their plans.
During their visit, which took place in 2024, the Aitken Spence team met with various local stakeholders, including companies like Ranadi Plantations, Nature’s Way Cooperative, Jack’s Mango Farm, and Bula Coffee. These discussions, facilitated by Investment Fiji, aimed to uncover viable agricultural opportunities that could enhance the country’s productivity and sustainability through innovative technologies and renewable energy solutions.
Dr. Rohan Fernando, a board director at Aitken Spence, emphasized the abundant opportunities for commercial farming in Fiji, particularly for crops such as papaya, pineapples, dragon fruits, coffee, and passion fruit. He noted that their comprehensive approach includes not only innovative farming practices but also advanced processing techniques, focusing on both local markets and export potential.
Investment Fiji has played an instrumental role in these efforts, helping the delegation navigate the investment climate and connect with local partners. The collaboration aims to reduce Fiji’s reliance on imported agricultural products and expand its export markets. Recently, Investment Fiji announced that the team is working on finalizing land arrangements at a proposed pilot site in Nawaicoba, Nadi.
Kamal Chetty, CEO of Investment Fiji, expressed optimism over the partnership, highlighting its alignment with Fiji’s economic growth vision. The growing investment landscape indicates promising prospects for job creation, agricultural advancements, and a more self-sufficient economy.
This development mirrors a broader trend in Fiji, where the government is actively seeking to diversify the economy beyond tourism. Investments in agriculture can potentially catalyze a transformation in the sector, offering new opportunities for local farmers and businesses alike.
The future indeed looks positive as Aitken Spence prepares to deepen its engagement in Fiji’s agricultural landscape.
