Customs officers at Nadi International Airport made a significant interception of undeclared ammunition from a passenger arriving on a flight from Los Angeles. The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) reported that this successful operation was initiated following targeted risk assessments and specific indicators noted by the frontline officers.

In accordance with customs regulations, ammunition is classified as a weapon due to its essential role in weapon systems and its potential to cause harm. As part of standard procedure, the passenger and their luggage were referred to the Border Police for further investigative measures.

Udit Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the FRCS, expressed gratitude for the vigilance and quick action of the customs officers involved. He emphasized the importance of compliance with customs declarations, highlighting that severe penalties are in place for non-compliance. Singh stated, “This successful operation highlights our officers’ dedication to protecting our borders and preventing the entry of prohibited or undeclared items.”

This incident reinforces the proactive stance taken by FRCS in addressing border security threats, a trend reflected in recent efforts to combat drug trafficking and other illicit activities at the airport. For instance, just weeks prior, customs officials intercepted a passenger with nearly 2.3 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, signifying an ongoing battle against drug smuggling.

The FRCS is committed to enhancing risk assessment and targeting measures to continue safeguarding Fiji’s borders. They encourage all travelers to fully comply with customs regulations, reminding the public that any failure to declare restricted or prohibited items can lead to serious consequences.

This latest interception serves as a pivotal reminder about the continuous need for vigilance at Fiji’s borders and reinforces the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community to uphold safety and security. Such effective measures not only protect the nation but also promote public confidence in the ability of authorities to manage border security effectively.
