The Pacific Farmer Organisations (PFO) has made a historic appointment by naming Aileen Burness as its new chair, marking her as the first woman to assume this prestigious role. This appointment comes as the organization gears up for 2026, which has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

Burness is highly regarded throughout Fiji and the broader Pacific region for her extensive contributions to the agricultural sector, particularly in the area of floriculture. Together with her late husband, Don Burness, she played a pivotal role in supporting farmer organizations and promoting agricultural development across multiple Pacific nations.

Her strong work ethic and practical leadership style are expected to drive the PFO forward as she takes on this significant leadership position. Aileen Burness succeeds Minoru Nishi, who has served on the board since the PFO’s inception 12 years ago. Although Nishi has stepped down as chair, he remains on the board to provide continuity and ongoing support for the organization.

This leadership transition is a promising step not only for the PFO but also for the representation of women in agricultural leadership, setting a hopeful tone as the organization looks toward future initiatives.
